harpsichord - organ - fortepiano

Mario Sarrechia (°1988) started his musical education on the piano at the Music Academy ‘Jozef Pauly’ in Ekeren (Antwerp). Next he switched to the harpsichord with Luc Vanvaerenbergh at the Secondary School for Music ‘De Kunsthumaniora’ in Antwerp.

In 2010 he obtained his Bachelor degree on the harpsichord with great distinction at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp with Ewald Demeyere. In 2015 he got his Master degree with distinction at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Bob van Asperen and Menno van Delft where he also took lessons in pianoforte with Richard Egarr.

He gave concerts in Europe and Japan’s major concert halls including Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona (ES), Concertgebouw Amsterdam (NL), Tokyo Opera City Hall (JP), Frimurerlogen (NO) and Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ (NL).

As a soloist he gave several solo-recitals on harpsichord, virginal and organ with a repertoire ranging from the early keyboard music into the classical genre. In 2013 he recorded a CD with music around the Antwerp Ruckers family of harpsichord makers. In 2017 a CD with La Petite Bande is planned.

As a continuo-player he performed with different ensembles such as La Petite Bande (Sigiswald Kuijken), Nordic Baroque Orchestra (Enrico Onofri), La Sfera Armoniosa (Mike Fentross), RedHerring (Patrick Denecker), Nederlands Kamerkoor, Eik en Linde, Ensemble a, Rood Hout, La Chambre du Roi and the Brabant Orchestra.

Furthermore he is a founding member of the new promising baroque ensemble Amsterdam Corelli Collective, which was recently selected for Ambronay’s Eeemerging programme.

He has participated in several opera productions with amongst others Opera Zuid (Dirk Vermeulen with ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’ by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart), the Dutch National Opera Academy (Julian Perkins with ‘La Finta Gardiniera’ by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart), International Operaproductions Holland (Dirk Vermeulen with Così fan tutte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart).

As to regularly complete his training he participated in different masterclasses with Bob Van Asperen, Gustav Leonhardt, Christophe Rousset and Béatrice Martin (harpsichord), Thérèse de Goede (continuo), Sigiswald Kuijken (‘H-Moll Messe’ and Cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach; as ‘La Canterina’ by Haydn), Bart van Oort (pianoforte), Nicolas Achten (concerning ‘L’Orfeo’ by Claudio Monteverdi), Wim Becu and Dirk Snellings (‘Polyhymnia Caduceatrix et Panegyrica’ by Michael Praetorius), Fabio Bonizzoni and Roberta Invernizzi (concerning early Italian solocantatas), Emma Kirkby and Fred Jacobs (concerning the vocal music by Henry Purcell), Lars Ulrik Mortensen (EUBO).

He continuously worked on several art-collectives, e.g. BOX (Baroque Orchestration X), a baroque-collective of theorbist Pieter Theuns, which amongst others co-operated with Dez Mona (Gregory Frateur). Previously he worked as a composer for the theatre-collective MARS, founded by actor and director Angelo Tijssens.

Besides his activities as a professional harpsichordist he also teaches music theory at the Hogeschool Leiden. In 2017 he gave a lecture during the NEMA-conference at the University of Cambridge.
